Workplace Injuries Occur everyday
Work place injuries occur every day and cost businesses millions of dollars. They destroy the lives of not only the victim but their family and co-workers as well. In a report released in October 2013 by Safe Work Australia, it was reported that from 1 July 2003 to 30 June 2011, 232 workers were killed following a fall while working at heights.
That represents 11% of all workers killed in a workplace incident over this period. In 2010–11, 29 workers died following a fall from height. These numbers are staggering. Working at heights is very safe when done correctly. That means having the right training, right experience, right supervision, the right height safety equipment and the right height safety system. It is vital that all of these elements are properly addressed when working at heights because if they are not it will cost lives. There are very clear guidelines on what must be followed to ensure that workers who are are not exposed to hazards. Under the Work Health & Safety Act 2011 and the Work Health & Safety Regulation 2011 there are severe penalties for PCBU’s (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking) who fail to comply with their primary duty to provide a workplace that is safe.
